Hello everyone!
Aidan here. I’m glad we all got to meet at ACP. This is the first edition of the Cal State Student Wire. Our goal is to combine resources to improve our coverage of the California State University system.
I’ve had this idea for around a year, and after a quick conversation with Austin Brumblay of the Daily 49er, who suggested the same wire system, we pulled together a quick meeting of CSU student reporters. Bella Ross and Michael Cline of the Daily Aztec, Margherita Beale and Kendra Rivera-Molina of the State Hornet, Marisa Vasquez of the University Times, Sam Underwood of the Runner and Stephanie Zappelli from Mustang News were present at that meeting. We later found Pate McMichael, advisor for the Orion, and added him to this project. Together, we are seven universities of the 23 CSUs, with plenty of room for more.
When you write a story about the CSU system or the local impact of a CSU policy, log in here and send it along. The article will be published in an email, and posted on this website, calstatestudentwire.substack.com. Label it “Free to republish” if you are comfortable with other student papers republishing it, and “For information only” if you aren’t.
Austin will be taking photos of the next CSU Board of Trustees meetings and sharing them with us, solving a lasting problem I’ve had of never having adequate photographs of the Board to publish with my stories. Soon, I’ll send along a collection of stories we’ve written that may affect your campus. Some stories we could collaborate on or share:
The recent Chancellor search
The restructuring of financial aid
Campus meetings of the California State Student Association
CSU compensation policies
CSU-wide student housing trends
AB 1460 and the ethnic studies requirement
CSU-wide free immigration attorney services
Additional resources, interviews and notes can be shared on the Google Drive, which I have personally forwarded you the log-in information for. If you have an idea for a collaboration, use the contact list on the Drive to reach out to project members, but send emails with this SubStack account only for content you have throughly edited to your journalistic standards, as anyone can view it on this public site.
Please share this with anyone else you think would be interested in this service, and let me know if you have any more ideas of how we can collaborate.
Best,
Aidan McGloin
