Stories-Board of Trustees
The CSU Board of Trustees is meeting March 23. The live-stream will be available here, and the full agenda is available here. I found a couple of stories in the agenda you may want to report on.
A Board of Trustees committee will consider a resolution to host a biennial symposium to highlight African-American history and achievement, foster intercultural dialogue and advance anti-racism efforts. The first symposium would be in 2022. The agenda item is co-presented by student trustee and San Diego State student Maryana Khames. Page 122 of the agenda.
A Board of Trustees committee will discuss Cal State Northridge’s proposed three-story, 37,920 square feet, $32.5 million Sierra Annex building. Page 32 of the agenda.
The Committee on Governmental Relations’ agenda has a slew of state bills that could affect CSU students. I’ve highlighted some of them below. The rest can be found on page 12 of the agenda. None of these bills are guaranteed to be signed into law, and all will need to be approved by the House, the Senate, the governor, and many respective committees before they become law.
Senate Bill 26 would expand the rights of student athletes to receive compensation from their image. Their right to do so was signed into law in 2019, but this bill prevents a student athlete from losing scholarships or their spot on their teams due to their compensation. This bill has just passed the Senate’s Education Committee.
Senate Bill 367 would require opioid overdose medication in CSU first aid kits. It is on its way to be voted on by the Senate’s Education Committee.
Senate Bill 566 would require an annual five percent wage increase for CSU staff employees who are evaluated to deserve them by their administrators. It has passed the Senate’s Education Committee and has been passed to the Committee on Appropriations.
